The Truth About Luck, Hard Work, and Perseverance in Moving to Canada

Many people look at those who successfully moved to Canada and say, “How lucky they are!” But is it really luck that determines who gets to start a new life in Canada? Or is it something else—something within your control?

The Role of Luck

Yes, luck does exist. Some people are born into circumstances that give them an advantage:

  • They are born healthy.

  • They grow up in a supportive family.

  • They have a passport that facilitates international mobility.

These factors certainly help, but they do not guarantee success. Many people with similar advantages never make it to Canada. Why is that? Because luck alone is not enough.

Hard Work and Perseverance: The Real Game Changers

A life built on luck alone is a fragile one. When you rely only on chance, you are dependent on something you cannot control. The real game changers in any major life project—including immigration—are hard work and perseverance.

Take Canada’s Express Entry system as an example. Some applicants seem to get lucky—they receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) quickly. But behind that “luck” are often months of preparation:

  • Researching immigration programs

  • Taking language tests

  • Having diplomas evaluated

  • Preparing financial documents

  • Staying patient and persistent, even when faced with delays or setbacks

Luck may influence when your opportunity comes, but without preparation, you won’t be able to take advantage of it.

It’s Too Easy to Blame It on Luck

Saying “They were just lucky” is an easy excuse for inaction. If you weren’t selected from the Express Entry pool, what’s your next move? Do you give up, or do you adapt? You might as well consider the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) or look into the Atlantic Immigration Program if your budget is limited. I am not an immigration lawyer or consultant, and I don’t advise you on which program is the best for you, but I ask you this question: If one door is closed, why not knock on another?

Make Your Own Luck

The good news? Luck is something you create. The more you work, the more you increase your chances of success. The more persistent you are, the more doors will open for you. Most successful immigrants did not just wake up one day and receive their visa. They took action and, step by step, they made it. Eventually, the right opportunity came along—only because they had made the effort to be ready for it.

The Importance of Strategy

Of course, hard work and perseverance alone are not enough. The effort must be directed in the right way. Working hard without a clear plan is like rowing in circles—you will exhaust yourself without ever reaching your goal.

To move to Canada, you need

  • The right knowledge

  • A realistic assessment of your options

  • A well-structured plan to improve your chances

That’s where coaching can make a difference. I help people focus their efforts where they matter most, and avoid wasting time on ineffective strategies. If you want guidance tailored to your situation, book a coaching session with me.

Bottom Line

Moving to Canada is not just a matter of luck. It’s about preparation, persistence, and making smart decisions. If you really want to make your dream come true, start taking action today. The sooner you start, the “luckier” you will be!
